Flashback: September 23, 2018

A look back at an unposted trip from 2018. The fish especially liked those rubber legs. And so did I.

The Great Shaku Hunter

Rolf Nylinder and Japanese Fly Fishing. That's zen in my book.

"Untitled" by Noor Ibn Najam

No matter the rush of undertow
everything else is still
here. I scrawl your name
at the bottom of the river
I sing it and it sings me
back. What I’d give for a name
so keen     it whittles
the valleys of my neck. I’m forever drenched
in this night, and you
no longer exist. The river catches
the sky’s black, ink
meant to preserve a memory. I stay
because it’s easy. Here. I relive
what you did to me, find myself again
in the water—swollen and sullen
as a bruise. I trace
and retrace, graffiti
every river’s bank, drown
into ecstasy

instead of moving on with my life.
I wear what you did to me
like gills, a new way to breathe.
I jump into the river
for days. I forget I have lungs at all.

Mosquitoes & Mayflies, Episodes 1 - 4

Rolf Nylinder, cinematographer extraordinaire, and Havard Stubo, jazz man. Both superb storytellers and damn good fishermen. And big fish of the midnight sun all wrapped up in the whole Scandinavian vibe.

Flashback: September 20, 2018

A look back at a trip in 2018 that was never posted. A new round of late wildflowers surrounded the trail to Clear Creek, buckeyes had dropped, a single smallie was haunting the water around the old railroad abutment, and the recent high water left its mark downstream. The smallie was nice, but a pocketful of buckeyes to take home is always satisfying.

Flashback: August 28, 2018

A look back at a trip from last year that was never posted. A little color in the woods already, fished the boat docks with no results, covered a weed bed and found some bass that came up for a stripped stimulator but wouldn't bite, managed to fool only one bluegill, and fished in the balmy stillness while the stars came out.

Flashback: August 26, 2018

Looking back on some trips that were unposted in 2018. Tried out my new reel in this one, bought for the Henry's Fork trip then less than a month away. Saw another guy in a float tube, first sighting of a tube in Indiana. And fished until the full moon rose.
